Overview of Careers Support
Supporting Students
The Careers Department's main purpose is to help Level 2 and 3 students with the wide variety of choices facing them concerning further and higher education and employment.
A team of well-trained and enthusiastic Careers Advisers ensure that up to date information, advice and guidance is readily available when needed. This is delivered through the taught careers IMPACT tutorial programme (recognised by OFSTED as good practice and effective), individually through careers interviews and through the annual Meet Your Future event and HE & Gap Year Fayre.
The Careers Department was one of the most important and helpful services I experienced at 91亚色. Without them I would never have had the confidence to send off my university applications.
Careers Education
The Careers programme is delivered through the first and second year IMPACT Tutorial programmes. These cover issues relevant to all students including university, employment, gap years and the expanding range of higher and degree level apprenticeships which can lead to degree level qualifications.
Level 2 students studying a GCSE programme receive a tailored Careers programme consisting of Careers IMPACT tutorials advising on all post-GCSE options to include further education and apprenticeships and work-based learning opportunities. All Level 2 student are offered a 1-2-1 Careers Guidance interview with the designated Careers Adviser for their programme.
There are separate programmes to support gifted and talented students.
These programmes are run by specialist Level 6 qualified Careers Advisers who have developed a wealth of expertise in their areas of interest.
Students applying for employment or apprenticeships are supported individually in their applications by the Careers Adviser specialist in Work-Related Learning.
Universities and employers increasingly recognise the potential of students whose personal circumstances may have restricted achievement at school or college. This is called Widening Participation and students at 91亚色 are supported in this area by a Careers Adviser who can help to identify contextual offers, access programmes and opportunities for work experience.
Careers Guidance
This is concerned with an individual’s choices. These are explored initially through a one-to-one interview which allows students the opportunity to look at ideas, discuss action planning and goal setting. Students can self-refer or use the drop-in Careers sessions.
The Careers Department Administrative Assistant is always on hand to help and can be contacted on 01432 355166 or email careers@hereford.ac.uk.
Nerys Evans is the Careers Leader and Head of Careers and can be contacted on 01432 355166 or email n.evans@hereford.ac.uk.
I wouldn't have had a clue what to do for university. Careers guide you through it and are very helpful.
Resources
A range of online careers resources are available to students including Unifrog and eclips. Students are encouraged to use these resources in their own time as well as during the lessons. There are subject reading lists and other careers information in the Library and in Careers reception (A059).
We have close links with the main Library which also stocks a wealth of careers related material.
